Degree Confluence Project

The degree confluence project was started by Alex Jarrett in February 1996 because he liked the idea of visiting a location represented by a round number longitude/latitude such as 43°00'00"N 72°00'00"W. Since then he has started a website and it has really become popular with hikers and adventures. These intersections of round latitude and longitude numbers have been given the title "confluence" which by definition is, a meeting place or a flowing together. There are 64,442 latitude and longitude degree intersections in the world (counting each pole as one intersection). After discounting many confluences near the poles, and in the oceans, 16,146 meet the goals of the project, with most of these (14,027) being on land.

There are still 13,515 to be found so there is no worry about running out of confluences. The best part about a confluence is that it can be found in a desert, lake, summit, or the middle of a forest. Hiking in itself is ok but with a quest to reach a confluence! What a great idea. When reaching a confluence, several pictures are taken for documenting purposes. The pictures and corresponding hiking story are uploaded to www.confluence.org.
